Exploring Yoga Nidra
Exploring Yoga Nidra
From Experiencing to Creating
Yoga Nidra is so much more than relaxation.
Yoga Nidra is often described as a form of deep relaxation — and while profound relaxation can certainly be part of the experience, there is much more to explore.
Yoga Nidra invites us towards the fascinating threshold between waking and sleep, where the body can become deeply still while a thread of awareness remains. It offers an opportunity to explore not only rest, but pratyahara, the nervous system, different states of consciousness, prana, the nature of awareness and our relationship with the body and mind.
A six-session journey
Over six fortnightly Saturday mornings, we'll approach Yoga Nidra from several different perspectives — experiential, traditional, scientific and creative.
We'll explore relaxation as an unravelling of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual tension, alongside an understanding of the central and autonomic nervous systems and what happens as we move towards deep rest.
We'll investigate the yogic understanding of pratyahara and consciousness, the threshold between waking and sleep, and the relationship between Yoga Nidra, sleep, hypnagogic states and hypnosis. We'll also explore how pranayama and mantra can help prepare the body and mind for the inward journey of Nidra.
Throughout the course you'll experience a variety of Yoga Nidra practices and begin to understand how they are constructed. We'll explore rotation of consciousness, breath awareness, sankalpa, opposites, imagery, language, voice, rhythm and silence, asking not simply what comes next? but why is it there?
We'll also look at how Yoga Nidra can be adapted for different intentions and needs, using some of my own scripts as examples, and consider research into areas such as the nervous system, sleep, learning and memory.
From experiencing to creating
As the course progresses, you'll gradually begin creating your own Yoga Nidra.
Rather than simply giving you a formula to follow, we'll explore how to find your own language and style, how to choose appropriate imagery and suggestions, how to use silence, and how to create a practice with a particular person, group or intention in mind.
By our final session, you'll have developed the tools and confidence to begin writing and guiding Yoga Nidra for yourself or others.
Who is the course for?
Everyone is welcome.
You don't need to be a yoga teacher or have extensive experience of Yoga Nidra. Curiosity and a willingness to explore are much more important.
For qualified yoga teachers, the course also offers 18 hours of study and practice that can contribute towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Everyone completing the course will receive an Inner Healing School of Yoga Certificate of Completion.
